School Meals
When your child tucks into a school meal you can be assured a lot of thought has gone into making it as healthy as possible.
We only provide food that is fresh, prepared daily and which provides everything your child needs to feed their bodies and their minds without compromising quality and choice.
Therefore, we have put into place the ingredients that make our school meals service one you can trust – from preparation to plate.
Remember, all children in Reception, Y1 and Y2 are entitled to a free school meal everyday.

Meals at High Spen Primary
The health of our children is essential for their future success as adults. Without healthy lifestyles, children will not be able to take full advantage of the opportunities that will be presented to them. The pandemic has further highlighted the issue of healthy eating and the need for our bodies to be a strong as possible to fight off disease in many forms.
At High Spen we work towards receiving the Healthy School Award, which demonstrates our commitment to the all-round well-being of our pupils. One element considered in the award is the nutritional balance of both school meals and packed lunches.
We ask for your support in this regard when giving children a packed lunch. If you wish to send in a chocolate bar, please look for the snack size options rather than full size bars. Please avoid sweets or fizzy pop. The school will provide drinking water if required but any sugar free/no added sugar juice is welcomed.
Examples of food that could be provided:
- sandwich
- fruit
- a biscuit and

Allergies – WE ARE A NUT FREE SCHOOL.
We have a small number of children at school who have food allergies. Most severe allergic reactions are the result of ingestion, but other reactions can be triggered by touching surfaces, such as computer keyboards or books if these surfaces have previously been used by someone who has eaten nut products. Nuts are part of a healthy diet for those without chronic allergies, but we would appreciate if pupils eat such snacks at home rather than bring them into school. Therefore, we would ask all parents not to provide pupils with school snacks for break time or in packed lunches which include nuts.
Grapes
If you pack grapes in your child’s lunch box, please make sure they are always cut lengthwise. This is so they can pass more easily through smaller throats. Grapes should not be cut width wise, because they’ll still be big enough to choke on.
