Sports Premium

Sports Premium Budget

What is the Sports Premium?

The government provides funding per annum to improve the provision of Physical Education and sports in primary schools.

The School Sport Premium money is ring-fenced and can only be spent on Physical Education and sports provision in school. Schools spend the funding on improving and enhancing their provision of physical education and sport.

This year, school will continue to invest the money in the provision and promotion of sports, activity and healthy lifestyles across the school.

Ofsted recommendations are that investment should “impact on increasing participation, promoting health and wellbeing and improving the performance of all children and groups”.

What difference will Sport Premium make to PE and sports participation?

  • There will be an increase of children who will participate in sports and school sport competitions;
  • All children will participate in intra-school competitions, e.g. house matches, competitions in PE lessons, School Games day;
  • More opportunities for children to take part in inter-school competitions;
  • After-school opportunities led by professional coaches;
  • New equipment will be bought to enhance the teaching of sports within school;
  • Children will have access to more physical development opportunities in order to support children’s development and health.

Ways we have been spending the money:

  • Providing professional development opportunities in sports for staff in the teaching and assessment of PE;
  • Running or supervising cluster events;
  • Buying quality assured PE/sport sessions;
  • Continuing to develop the Power of PE Planning and new assessments within the school year;
  • Providing more after-school activities for pupils;
  • Providing opportunities for all children to participate in local sports festivals/competitions/inter events;
  • Every child from Years 4, 5 and 6 will attend swimming sessions in a year. The children who are still learning to swim/can swim 25m independently will have extra sessions to ensure that they become successful;
  • Cycle Generation – Cycle Generation is an exciting new sport in High Spen. Experienced coaches allow a full class from Year 4 to build up their cycling skills and then use these in the community. Cycle Generation provide enough bikes for the children, so each child has access to this fun filled session;
  • Swimming – children will receive more time to access swimming sessions to develop their confidence in the water and to be able to swim 25m confidently. By providing this opportunity, children practise their skills and co-directly swim 25m. During the summer time, we are offering additional swimming for Year 4 and Year 5 children to reduce the amount of catch-up needed during the school year.  We have prioritised and will continue to prioritise swimming. We are determined to support as many KS2 Leavers as possible making the 25m mark by July;
  • Children accessing a climbing wall at Gibside School;
  • Sports week including intra-school events;
  • Sports coaches coming into school, allowing children access to sports not taught within the statutory curriculum.
